Music Curriculum Intent

At Nene Valley our music curriculum inspires our pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, whilst creating their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. At Nene Valley Primary School we value the importance of Music, its creativity and the impact that it has on the members of our community. Our curriculum is sequenced and builds year-on-year, ensuring our children learn more, know more and remember more. Our music education develops transferable knowledge and skills such as communication skills, a discipline to persevere, mastery of memory and increased co-ordination, self-expression, intelligence and creativity.

Our pupils have the opportunity to listen and appraise, sing, compose and perform as well as critique their own work and the work of others. We use the ‘Charanga’ Music scheme to ensure that the inter-related dimensions of Music are taught and reinforced regularly; pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture, structure and notation. Children learn to play and perform with a range of tuned and untuned instruments such as the ocarina, recorder, clarinet, glockenspiel and a range of percussion instruments. We sing together weekly in a whole school singing assembly and listen to Music from a wide selection of genres such as Pop, Jazz and Classical.
