Smoothie Making: A Healthy and Hands-On Learning Experience for Years 1 and 2

This term, the children in Years 1 and 2 had a fantastic time exploring healthy eating through a hands-on smoothie-making project. This engaging activity not only encouraged creativity in the kitchen but also taught the importance of balanced nutrition and maintaining proper hygiene when preparing food.

Learning About Healthy Eating

As part of their Design Technology curriculum, the children began by learning about the food groups and discussing what it means to eat a healthy diet. They explored a variety of fruits and vegetables, identifying their nutritional benefits and understanding how these foods contribute to our overall well-being. From juicy strawberries to vibrant spinach leaves, the children were introduced to a colourful range of ingredients that are both delicious and nourishing.

Hands-On Smoothie Creations

The highlight of the project was the opportunity for the children to take part in making a class smoothie. Working as a class, they discussed combinations of fruits and vegetables, experimenting with the idea of different flavours and textures. The children and adults chose a classic combination of fruits and vegetables and then the children watched as the adults demonstrated how to chop, prepare and blend the ingredients. Eventually, the excitement in the room was palpable as they eagerly tasted their creations.

Hygiene in the Kitchen

A key focus of the activity was teaching the importance of food hygiene. Before beginning, the children learnt essential practices such as washing their hands thoroughly, cleaning the equipment, and rinsing the fruits and vegetables to remove any dirt or bacteria. These lessons reinforce good habits that will stay with them as they grow, helping them understand how to prepare food safely and responsibly.

A Blend of Fun and Education

The smoothie-making project was more than just a fun activity—it was an opportunity for the children to connect with the idea of healthy living in a meaningful way. By exploring nutritious ingredients and practising hygiene, they developed practical skills that align with the school’s commitment to promoting well-being.

The children’s enthusiasm was clear throughout the project. This memorable experience has not only broadened their understanding of healthy eating but also inspired them to make positive choices about food in the future.
